I will be arriving in Bangkok next Sunday around 3pm and my plan is to travel straight north to Chiang Mai and spend a few weeks seeing the north of Thailand. I have been looking and I know there is a sleeper train service that, if i was to get, would get me into Chiang Mai around 7am on the Monday morning. Does anybody have any experience of this - was it easy enough to book onto etc? Or would someone suggest getting to Chiang Mai another way?
I was on that sleeper in February. It is very popular and a reservation is advised. There is also bus service to CM. I reserved my tickets through this small agency in Bangkok:
You can fly this leg as well. Try here. If that won't work, you can get yourself over to Mo Chit (northern) bus station and take the overnight bus up to CM. Don't need a reservation. The train you will have to book in advance. Good luck with your planning.

I've been there in february, just came from the airport to the train station and baught the ticket for the night train to CM. One at 6 o'clock is good, you'll arrive next morning around 6-7-8-9...
Not sure I"m much help, I took this train trip when I was a kid in 1973. But I do remember looking down the toilet and seeing the tracks going by. But then again something tells me that may still be the case.
