Hi, I’ll be travelling NZ for about 6 weeks. I have a YHA card for travelling Oz to get discounts and cheap beds, etc. Is the YHA card the best option for this type of thing in NZ also?

Thanksing you!!

There's really no "best" card; as in Australia, most places in New Zealand which offer significant discounts to backpackers just require "a" backpacker card, and it doesn't matter if that's YHA, VIP or BBH (a New Zealand-only hostel organization). YHA hostels in New Zealand are of very similar quality and general attitude as those in Australia, and since the card is worldwide and valid for a year, if you like their hostels in Australia, I'd just stick to the same in New Zealand.

YHA is the Youth Hostel Association (known as Hostelling International worldwide). You can join the organization both locally wherever you are now (since membership is valid worldwide) or at an Australian hostel (so you can just buy a membership card when you first check in).
If you stay at hostels associated with this organization (generally very high quality, if sometimes found to be lacking a bit in atmosphere by some people who prefer more alternative / party-oriented hostels), you'll earn the cost of the membership back in ~10 days. Plus, as mentioned in the thread, it counts as a general "backpacking" card, which makes various other organizations (including many transport companies) give you extra discounts.
