hey, me and my boyfriend are looking in to booking somewhere for christmas and new year however are having trouble finding a hostel that is cheap and not already fully booked. we first looked at sydney and then brisbane, was wondering if anyone has any advice or good places apart from these 2. we are starting of in cairns at the beginning of oct so will be at least half way to sydney around that time.
Sydney is by far the best place in Australia for NYE. It is recognised around the world as one of the best places for NYE for the massive fireworks display. I know that some of the travellerspoint community has been planning a get together this new years eve which is mentioned at the top of this part of the forum.
Sydney is not a cheap place for New Years Eve as all hostels put prices up a lot and most also put minimum stay conditions which are like 7 days or more around that time. I booked my accommodation about mid February and quite a few people had already booked for NYE where I am booked in to stay.
thanx for the advice. dont know what we will end up doing, after searching for a few hours finally found a hostel but it was 11 nights minimum, altogether was going to cost a grand. definately not in my price range. will keep looking though. thanx, claire x
I hadnt much bother getting places in Tasmania, had more bother getting food on Christmas day. I wont ever forget it - No where was open and I had gone off down town with my mate around lunch time, looking to get a christmas dinner. There was no places open apart from a gas station at which I got a microwaveable hotdog and also got back to the hostel in time for the leftovers of a barbie. I almost missed the food there too.
Tassie was beautiful for Christmas and New Year - you should head down to Hobart for the New Year Festival and the boat Races coming in from Sydney to Hobart. It was amazing and oh dont forgot to go up on to Wellington Mountain up above the city, the view is awesome and fireworks are worth seeing.
