Does anybody have some experience with travelling in the area between Ozamis, Butuan, Malaybalay and Marawi?

Some sources say it's better to travel with a local guide to Marawi, someone who can feel the tension. Is this really advisable, or is no problem to travel alone to this city (Marawi)?

Last year I made two trips to Mindanao-April & Sept . and covered most of Mindanao, including Marawi,Ozamiz, CDO, Iligan, Butuan, Davao, Gensan, Lake Sebu as well as Zamboanga.. all by road. May I offer a bit of my experiences?

You can get to Marawi via Iligan (50km) by bus but the problem is you may face several military road blocks.. which means luggage checks, getting up and down the bus...can be quite a hassle. Well, i took the bus despite the hassle. So it may be advisable to go by private car, preferably with a Maranao, a local Muslim tribe, as guide or friend. You can easily get private transport in Iligan.

Iligan is about 85km to Cagayan De Oro, and the road to Butuan from CDO, in parts, is bad. The road (BuDa route) to Malaybalay from CDO is ok. All these routes are served by bus, nothing to worry about tension, etc.

I am not sure where in Mindanao is your starting point.

Have fun!.

Im just wondering on what are you going to do in Marawi City?
Dont you know that is not safe to travel on those areas today.
But i'll tell you the easiest route to go to Marawi City.
If youre starting point is Cotabato City then just ride a L300 Van bound for Marawi.
