My Girlfriend and I are including a week in Rio De Janeiro in our RTW trip during Carnival time and would love to hear any recommendations of cheap accommodation, best place to buy carnival tickets, places to go, places to avoid, etc.

You better book quickly, or else you will find you will be in the stable with the baby jesus.

Hostels enforce bookings over the whole carnival, check the online hostel booking sites. We stayed at one that had a great breakfast, can't remember the name, it is a very distinctive looking fake cave sort of entrance in blue, with rooftop bar, I'm sure someone out there will know the name.

I think that hostel is Stone of a Beach. Aint sure tho

Get ready to be ripped off! no Kidding.. i work at a hostel and from 30 reals they gonna charge 120 for the same dorm!
and i also think yo should book asap!

if u have a brazilian friend, ask him to buy the tickets for you. i think you should avoid spending your lovely money trying to buy it in ipanema, leblon area. maybe try other hostels in another part of the city that might sell it. one ticket that costs 15 i saw being sold for 80. unless oyu want a good section in carnival's runway,it's quite cheap.

you can get a month guideofwhat's happening in the city, or even if u buy the newspaper like on frday, they gonna have the whole schedule for carnival parties every where you can possibly imagine. these parties are mostly safe and gets you drunk easily Haha.

Dont miss Lapa street party but watch out the kids, while one is asking for money , his other 5 friends are mugging you.

yeah i'm in the same situation, i booked my rtw flights today and we arrive in Rio on the last day of carnival so its looking like 700pounds for both of us to stay 3 nights which we really can't afford! Is there surrounding areas we could stay at for cheaper? Or what other options do we have to avoid it!

You really don't have to worry about getting tickets for the carnival. It's like getting a pass for an air show. Just get as close to the main drag as you can and you can so often just join the line and see it all first hand for free.
People talk about the Notting Hill Carnival being a close second to Rio.. Don't believe them. Notting Hill is nothing but tweeked up sub-woofers on floats playing drum and bass, stalls selling bucket loads of undercooked overpriced chicken, police cars stopping and needlessly searching thousands of people and the evening brings on drunks and druggies like a stag night in Benidorm.
Go to Rio and just join in the fun for free.
The carnival is just awesome and goes on forever. The colours, music, costumes and hospitality are endless.
Oh except the rooms - yes they are scary expensive. There are campsites nearby, but it means lagging all your equipment around S.America. Then again, camping in S. America is so much pleasure.
This is almost turning into an alternative RTW post (i.e. not a word about Thailand, Laos etc. in sight.... And why not ? !).
Do Rio and love it ! !

Sometimes if you're in a big group or know other ppl, better is to rent an apartment. Even being reaaaally expensive, if you're gonna pay basically the same thing to stay at a hostel, better have your 'own place'
Or maybe if you're lucky, why not try Couchsurfing and stay for free?
