It depends on how much time you want to spend in each place. Apart from Beijing and Hong Kong, a few days each will often do for the rest. Beijing deserves at least a week as does Hong Kong. I didn't find much in Shanghai but some people will. Distances are such in China that flying is often the best option. Trains are slow and can be nearly the same price as a plane.
You'll find Chinese Travel Service bureaus in a number of places. I found them very helpful. A Lonely Planet guide to China is a good investment. Do spend time looking for accommodation in Hong Kong. It's often very expensive or very poor. I found a street map of Beijing very helpful (It has a subway in the central area which is easy to use.)
I don't know what this is costing you but some companies do do cheapish tours of China which when you realise it is all travel, all accommodation, all guides, often all food and so on, it is not so expensive and saves you a lot of hassle and possible worry.
Hi do you have links to the cheap flight for china domestic as the trains seem much cheaper?
