!) Is there a way to directly notify my own email contacts of a new blog entry without sending out my own email to them every time I post?

They would need to take action for this: subscribing on the subscribe page of the blog (e.g. filling in their name and email address). The subscribe page is linked to at the top of the navigation bar in your blog.
When you publish a blog entry, this will by default send an email to all the people who've signed up for the email subscription. (Though you have the option to disable that, or to remove people from the list of subscribers.)

2) Can I send my blog out to other blogging sites, ie travelpod? Please explain how to use rss feeds.

This depends on those other blogging sites; I'm not familiar with travelpod, so I don't know if that specific site supports it. But assuming they have a feed import function somewhere, then all there is to it is to just give those sites the url to your feed, and that other site will do everything else. There's a direct link to your feed for easy copy/pasting, again on the subscribe page of your blog, directly under the "XML subscription" heading. (A lot of times you could even just give the main url of your blog, and that other site would find out the address of the feed by itself, but not all sites are advanced enough to support this.)

There's a short tutorial here on how to display your blog automatically on Facebook. That uses the blog's XML (RSS) feed.

Like Sander says, there's no way to automatically import a whole bunch of friends email addresses as subscribers. We believe that's a choice that should be given to your friends instead, ie. they should choose to subscribe to your blog rather than automatically being subscribed. If you give them the link to the subscribe page on your blog, they'll be able to easily enter their email/name there or subscribe automatically via the feed.

Thanks for the info. I've emailed my friends to get them to sign up. However when I tried to import my url to opensalon it was rejected even though they have an import function. I added /rss.xml at the end as well, but that made no difference. Any suggestions, jonshapiro

Weird. Assuming I'm at the right "open salon" website, this works for me. I enter http://jonshapiro.travellerspoint.com/rss.xml in the feed url input box at the blogimport page, check the "I have permission to republish this content" checkbox, and click next. That shows your blog post, which I can then import (I imported it for my test account as a draft to make certain I didn't accidentally republish it).

Could you try again (making certain you're using the exact URL for your feed as I used above), and if it again doesn't work, tell me at what step it fails, and what exact error message you get (copy/paste it if possible), if any?
