Hi folks,

As part of a trip to Europe, I'm going to be spending a weekend travelling around Lake Geneva in Switzerland in mid-September. Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good, cheap hotel or guest house they may have stayed in at any point around the lake. It doesn't need to be anything too grand, as long as it's comfortable... and not too expensive! Preferably not a hostel, please.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer. ;)

Well... if anyone's making a similar trip, I can recommend - on the Swiss side - the Hotel de Seize Siecle (16th Century) in Nyon. The room was a bit basic, but the service and breakfast were both excellent. 75 CHF for the night, which translates to about 49 Euros. And Nyon is such a lovely town - right by the lake, with ferry services to the medieval French town of Yvoire, which is certainly well worth a visit.

That's okay. Do make sure you take that ferry trip to Yvoire. 19 Euros return from Nyon (about 20 minutes each way). It's a walled-in medieval town with no vehicle access, so you can walk around freely. A huge choice of bars, restaurants, creperies and bistros... and you can feel the history. Nyon, too, is a charming town: very friendly, and with a good street market on Saturdays.

If you can find the time during your trip, too, about an hour south of Geneva is the wonderful French town of Annecy - also on a lake, though a good deal smaller than Lake Geneva. Very well worth a visit for history, food, water sports, hiking, cycling (a piste cyclable runs all along the lake shore)... and mountain scenery! If you're feeling especially adventurous, too, there are a couple of small villages up in the mountains on the eastern end of the lake (Montmin and Talloires) where you can take a 'tandem ride' (with an experienced flyer) over the lake on a paraglider. 80 Euros for a short flight... but boy, what a way to see things!

Bon voyage! :)
