Hey, my names Chris and I'm 22 from the UK.

I'm trying to find the best route to take on my quest to help others abroad. I want to work in an orphanage teaching english ideally, but every site I go through ends up wanting extortionate amounts of monies.

I want to be away for long enough to justify dropping my job, so a year would be good, does anyone know if there are any decent organisations to go through or where I can find paid work, even if its just to cover living expenses. I'm hoping to get a TEFL if needed.

If you are serious about volunteering abroad and have got some usefull skills you could always try the United Nations Volunteer Force.

I hope it's some help.

I know this is probably not very helpful, but when you are travelling, you often find projects, schools etc who welcome volunteers. It's just a matter of finding them, because being small projects, they don't really advertise. You just arrive, talk to people, and work. I've volunteered in Zimbabwe and Bolivia in such a way.

Not sure where you're looking to go either, but there is a project we came across in Arusha, Tanzania (am I allowed to post the link? remove it if it's classified as advertising or similar)- it's basically a hostel, but people are free to volunteer in various community projects for as long as they like and without obligations. They do various projects like childcare, teaching, creative arts etc. It's called the Ujamaa hostel and although we didn't have time to volunteer there, we had really positive feedback from the people who did. Good luck!

That looks very promising, wish I had enough money to stay there for years! Know anywhere else like that?

For India try

For Thailand volunteerteacherthailand

For Cambodia iamcambodia

I havent got the exact addresse to hand but just google them, I will be volunteering at the latter two over the next few months. You will only have to sort out your own food and accommodation but there are no fees for actually volunteering except a £60 reg fee at volunteerteacherthailand . Good luck

Would you consider orphanages in Romania? If you are interested I can message you details of a charity that takes on overseas volunteers and actually pays them a local wage.

Yes, that sounds great actually. I'd love to find some work where ever I go that can help pay for living expenses, I only have so much saved up =/

I have sent you a message. The charity I worked with a few years ago looks like its changed direction a bit, but it's still going strong.
I've messaged you their address. Hope you find something to your liking.
