Just wondering how long do people normally pre-book hostels for?
I'm arriving in Sydney in November and hoping to find more permanent accommodation once I get there! But how long shall I pre-book a hostel for before I leave? I was thinking 5 days or shorter!?
Also any nice/friendly hostel suggestions where a 25 year old lonesome shy lady traveller can make friends is more than welcome!
Thanks for any advice and experience shared!
The YHA just by Central Station is very nice. it is relatively "new" and it has great facilities, and I think that if I was a new arrival, with little info about what to do and see, I'd start there. There are also lots of places by Bondi Beach, but you can always re-shuffle there once you've got on your feet.
Don't forget that it is a long flight, and that you will be a bit woozy for a couple of days, while your body gets over the jet lag. Central is now a much nicer place than it used to be, and it is within walking distance of Chinatown (cheap food and cheap stuff), darling harbour, and the city in general. If you want to get to know the city, then I think it's a great base.
(I am from Sydney, although I've been in the UK for years now. I just went past the backpackers a few months ago, and remember thinking that it was looking nice and I would stay there if I was a young first time visitor.)
Here is a link to it: http://www.yha.com.au/hostels/details.cfm?hostelid=29
The YHA in Glebe is a good hostel, not too far from the city and in a good area. You could probably pre-book for up to 2 weeks to begin with.
A new YHA hostel is due to open in Sydney in November - in The Rocks area.
