Hi! I and a friend are going to Amsterdam in two weeks.
Does anyone have a good hotel recomandation? We have set the cost limit at max €80 pr night. We want a doubble room, and it needs to be in the city centre.

I was also trying to look for accomodation in Amsterdam, checked Lonely Planet and I found this cheap interesting accomodation called 'The Flying Pig Hostel'. Author's pick from Lonely Planet. I also research other places and this is the one I would be staying when I go there in Oct. It's right in the centre of Amsterdam, review said that it is a little noisy at night because they have their own pub downstairs. So if you like to party this is the one for you, if not you and your mate could cheap in for a proper hotel, check Brussel Airlines website and they also have good hotel deals there too for Amsterdam that I was interested. Goodluck and have fun...

When you say the city centre, do you mean the commerce city centre or the entertainment centre (coffee shops, museums, music, boat trips etc.) ? They are quite away apart.

Leidseplein or around Damrak square would be best, I think. However, anywhere in the Damrak area or Redlight would be OK....

Then you are spoilt for choice. There are all sorts of rooms available from the very cheapest hostel to some good 3* hotels all within a 5 minute walk of Centraal Station (station for the Dam and Red Light).
€80 a night for a room is much more than you will need for something more than half decent.
Places like The Flying Pig and Greenhouse Effect have varied quality and different priced rooms. They are hostels rather than hotels though. The more expensive rooms in The Greenhouse Effect (upstairs above the downstairs good fun coffee shop) are quite flashy and with a sort of psychadelic theme. Every one of them has a different layout.
Opposite The Red Light are several good hotels that will do you a double room including brekky for around €65 a night. Service is good and you will have a key so you can stagger back at any time if the night porter service isn't answering the door. Some hotels lock the main door after about 11:30pm.
Out of the summer season, there really isn't any need to book a room in advance. It won't take you more than 10 minutes to find one to your liking once you've crossed over the tram lines from the station and headed towards the district.
A good marker is to look out (on your left across the 1st canal) for The Grasshopper. That's the start of The Red Light, just behind it. The Grasshopper is probably the most famous coffee shop in the city, but its prices are expensive across the board from beer to a bed.
I visit amsterdam for work and play 3 or 4 times a year and when it's my job to find a room summer or winter, I never have a problem.
