One of my favorite "jokes" to tell people after returning from South America is:

"They have two national dishes in Bolivia.
Chicken with rice.... [long pause]
and rice with chicken."

Needless to say, I took a year off from my normally vegetarian ways :)

I didn't give up my vegetarian ways and mostly ate frijoles con aroz (beans and rice)
when I was travelling in South and Central America. I was soooooooo over it after a while...

Well, you do have the additional eggs and potatoes to brighten up the meal!

It reminds me of a conversation I had a few months ago in Malawi; the little restaurant advertised chicken, beef or fish with either rice, fries or nshima (maize porriage). I asked for fish with rice, and after a few minutes I was told there was no rice. Ok, I said, I'll take fries instead. Five minutes later, apologetic, the owner tells me there's no fries either. Fine, nshima it is. Half an hour later, the flustered owner comes back and says they're out of fish
I told them to just bring whatever they had. Chicken, chicken and more chicken.

I prefer chicken and chips. it's served fresh, usually within a few minutes of ordering, and it's cheap. An excellent meal. Amongst other places, there is a good cafe in Cusco that does it, a few minutes walk from the central square.

Get a micro-portion of chicken and rice on a plane and the rice always seems burnt in places. Yuk!
