I bought an Optus prepaid sim for my trip to Oz (arrive in sydney on 24th Sept) as I wanted to activate it and be able to give my number to people before I go, however when I try to activate it on the site it will only give me options for australian addresses etc.

Maybe the answer is simple and I'm just being an idiot, but is there anyway I can get around this and register before I go?

Have you tried just listing the Australian address of the first Hostel you are going to stay in? I'm assuming you have decided to book the first night's accommodation...

As it's a pre-paid sim, Optus isn't going to mail you bills or anything (at most they'll send you some advertising material), I'd say the address you put in isn't going to be that important, so long as you list some where. At least this way you'll get the number before you leave.

Have a great trip!

It doesn't matter a jot, just put in the address of the hostel - it's doubtful they'll get any mail and the SIM will be active as soon as you land and get it topped up.

I bought a aussie vodafone sim back in 2006, I activated it before I left. if I remember rightly all they wanted was a postcode so I just put in 2000 (central sydney).

I jumped off the plane and topped up with $20 in the airport arrivals at Sydney and it was ready to use!
