Hi,

My partner and I are going to be in Marrakesh next July and are thinking about heading out to Erg Chebbi for a 3-4 days. We were thinking about hiring a car and driving out there ourselves through the atlas mountains stopping off at the todra gorge and dades valley etc along the way.....is this possible?
Have any of you hired a car and driven out there yourselves?
Or is it a better idea to arrange transport through the Riad we are staying at in merzouga? (I know we can do this but it seems a bit expensive)
Any advice gratefully recieved!

Em x

Hi Em,

I did a road trip through southern Morocco last June and also went from Marrakech to Erg Chebbi. Well eventually, because we first went to Erg Chigaga, which, although not more beautiful, was more remote and in a great location near the Algerian border.

Roads are very good and so are roadsigns, which are in Arabic and French as well. Organised tours in Morocco can be quite good, but driving yourself is much more fun and gives much more freedom as well in my opinion.

Are you doing a 3-4 day trip in total from Marrakech or is it part of a bigger trip? It would be a little rushed otherwise.

First day for example from Marrakech to Ait Benhaddou. Further is not really enjoyable as you would be driving too much that first day. Don't forget to have a great lunch at the restaurant on top of the highest Moroccon pas in the Atlas Mountains, you can't miss it;)
On day two you can go to Draa or Todra (sorry, forgot which one is first one that road again) and on the 3rd day to the other one. Fourth day to Merzouga to visit Erg Chebbi.

We rented a car with Hertz in Marrakech, though with a general car broker, called holidayautos. They have very good deals and it's cheaper to book it in advance instead of just showing up. A compact aircon (recommended if travelling during summer!) will set you back around €35 or 30 GBP.

O, in Erg Chebbi, just choose a hotel at the edge of the desert and walk into the dunes yourself. A camel ride is nice, but you won't be alone and you will save money just going in yourself by foot. The views are equally stunning!

Have fun!
Michael.

I can't agree more. It costs a bit extra and is certainly not low-budget but with your own transport you are free like a bird;)
