Hi Mike, as you mentioned the cheapest way to get to Fraser Island is walking/swimming

Otherwise you'll have to hire a 4x4 and catch the ferry or go on an organised tour. I've been there a few times and always taken my own 4x4 which probably isn't helpful for you, it looks like most backpackers arrange a group in Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach and hire a 4x4 troop carrier which is probably the cheapest way to go. Camping in tents on the island is available, check out the Queensland Government site for details on permits, camping fees and maps of the island including camping areas.

When I take my 4x4 over I need to pay for a vehicle permit, the ferry crossing and camp fees for each night, your permit and ferry charges might be included in 4x4 hire.

When I went to the Whitsundays I just turned up in Airlie Beach and booked tours and accomodation from there.

I did frasier island out of Rainbow beach. Its a great little beach town and only a short ferry ride to the island. The hostel set everything up, camping and cooking equipment, jeep rental and camping permits. Definately book in advance. There are diferrent places to camp over the island. You will have a meeting with your group before you go so you can shop for food and they tell you about the island and places to go and see. Definately take the 30 minute walk to lake wabby! Its a great time!! Have fun

Hi Mike

I am in Australia at the moment and have just finished an 8 week trip from Cairns to Sydney. I booked my Whitsunday trip last minute, I arrived in Airlie Beach on the Thursday and booked a great last minute (standby) trip for the following morning. I went on the Alexander Stewart which was great and I can highly recommend it.

We booked our Fraser Island trip in advance and booked with the company Unique Fraser. I cant fault the company, the hostel you stay in before and after fraser is nice (unlike some of the others i.e dingos, Koalas etc). The 4x4 was larger than some and it had been raised so we were not like some of the unfortunate 4x4's which kept getting stuck in the sand.
The company arranged our camping for us and provided tents etc.

Hope this helps
