Booking hotels/youth hostels via Travellerspoint

Travel Forums Asia Booking hotels/youth hostels via Travellerspoint

Hi all,

Now that my tickets are booked, I am wondering if anyone has booked accommodation via this webiste. I have looked at the hostels section/budget hotels and they all seem very cheap which is rather good.

Has anyone recently booked hostels/hotels using this webiste and how did the transactions go? Upon arriving at your chosen destination, what is the protocol. Common sense tells me you take your internet booking page and the hotel will finalise the total bill minus the deposit paid via this website. However, has anyone had any dodgy experiences? My main concern is the trustworthiness of these hotels/hostels? Has anyone been overcharged or been the victim of duplicate charging after they have they have left the accommodation? Can I pay deposit via credit card and pay the remaining balance in cash upon arrival?

Any info and advice would be appreciated as always.
Regards, Mohson

Paying the 10% deposit via creditcard, and paying the rest upon arrival is indeed the way things work. The ho(s)tel will always subtract that deposit from the charge. The only thing you ordinarily need to bring is the booking number you get after payment (although even this is usually not necessary, as most hostels just work based on your last name; still, for your own peace of mind and to have "proof" in the unlikely case the hostel doesn't know about your booking, bringing a printout of the booking confirmation could be a good thing).
Over the four and a half years that I've been present on the site, I've seen maybe a dozen people post here on the forum about bookings which went wrong because of hostels which turned out to be dodgy (either by not honoring their deposit, by overcharging, or by altogether losing the booking). In all cases that I remember seeing, the site owners here personally followed up with the party which deals directly with the hostels, and had the charges refunded. I'm thinking that truly dodgy hostels would immediately be removed from the system, too. The booking provider is such a large party that it's really in the interest of the hostels to treat their customers well. (And given the tens of thousands of hostels in the system, and the high numbers of bookings which are made through the system, these cases represent a tiny percentage of all bookings; they're truly exceptions.)

(P.S. For full disclosure I should say that although I wrote the above from my perspective as just a forum member, I also do some freelance programming work for travellerspoint from time to time, and this has included a code review and security audit of the code for accommodation bookings. So from that side I can also say that everything is safe, but it does make me a not-entirely-disinterested party.) :)

Yes, I did use this site, for quite a few bookings, and had no trouble with anything.
