Hey Bigmac,

From memory it was 20 RMB + any additional credits you wish to charge into the card. You can get them at most metro stations, the one you get off at from the airport train is probably the best bet.

As for how long it works for, it's meant to be forever, but my card from 2 years ago wasn't working and i had to buy a new one.

Anyone can use the card, as long as it's used one at a time, because the credit is removed when you exit the metro station / bus. So if you have 3 people entering the metro station at once, you need 3 cards, but if only one of you will use it at any one time, you only need one.

They are valid on all city trains and buses, you get a discount for buses by the way. Apparently, you can also get your 20RMB back if you return the card too.

Hope this helps
Li

Can't help with this one, but it brings back memories. I took my family RTW on '02-'03 and were in Beijing in August '02.
They were already selling 2008 Olympic baseball caps on the streets!
We used the Metro, but it was very simple - one circular line and a line across the centre of the city. I remember we found it surprisingly easy to cope with, but not the details I'm afraid.
If you need any family travel tips, please feel free to ask.
