Ever see a picture of yourself on a stranger's website?

Travel Forums Off Topic Ever see a picture of yourself on a stranger's website?

Everytime I'm walking through a town square in Eastern Europe or somewhere with 'quaint' arcitechture I pass a group of (usualy) Japanese tourists taking pictures.

Invariably I end up in their pictures as a passing blur.

So here's the question: has anyone ever come across one of these pictures by accident?

Maybe you're having tea in a new aqucaintance's house in Tokyo and they show you their photo album(s), all 783 of them... lo and behold, there you are, crossing a square in Prague or Petersburg with a big bag of greasy chips in your hand. Or maybe you're browsing through flickr on picassa or one of those web-album thingys and you spot yourself.

Is this too far-fectched, or did I stay up writing too late last night?

Zak, I've thought about this too....and I really don't want to be in other people's photos by accident, so I am forever turning away when I see a camera come out. It's not that I'm camea shy. It's that I find it weird to be collected in someone else's memory. I guess that this isn't that far from someone believing that you took a piece of their soul with the pic.

But no, as of yet I have not seen myself in someone else's pic. I think that would be catching lightning in a bottle unless you really went out and searched hard.

I did have a strange experience in Pattaya during my '08 trip. A ladyboy friend of mine got back into the game after about a 7-8 year absence from Pattaya. I saw 'So' out on Walking Street and hardly recognized 'her'. W/o the tattoo, I doubt that I would have. The years had not been kind to 'So'. Once one of the hottest LBs on the street, now 'she' was barely average. We chatted about the old days (90s) and she asked me to buy her a meal. We went to the food stalls by the Marine Hotel and ordered. 2 separate times tourists walked up to us and asked if they could take a photo of us together. I guess they wanted to show the folks back home what a strange place Pattaya is!

I walked through Leicester Square in central London today, and straight into the background of this couple's photo. I walk through touristy sites in London often and I'm sure I'm featured in the background of a whole bunch of photos. I hate it; I just hope I'm not doing anything overly embarrassing in any of them.

About four years ago, though, I randomly googled myself, first name only, and it did come up with a photo of me. It was in this guy's blog. I'd met him travelling for a day or so, we'd had our photo taken, but I'd forgotten all about it and had never actually seen it. And it did feel...quite strange.

Great answers guys.
I always get the impression that there are pictures of me in the background of hundreds of photos and I don't like it for some reason.
I start imagining the conversations... "ha ha ha look at the fat, white guy in the background. Man, he's so white. Is he really alive?"
I know what you're saying about the 'soul stealing' thing Piecar. We probably sound like wierdos but I'm with you on that one.
Anyway, tonight I intend to raise a Pint of Guinness to my stolen souls, all over the world, wherever they may be.
TO MY STOLEN SOULS!

Mate of mine went to South America for his gap year, 10 years ago now. First person he met at uni, turned out had been to South America too. They compared photos and sure enough, there he was, standing in the background on a photo taken on a mountain in Argentina.

Thai people just love taking photos.
My friend who's working for a well-known company asked me to be the speaker in one their branches' promotional party. I was only there for an hour and a half, taught them a few things, made them speak English and sang their requested songs. After 2 months, my friend gave me a copy of the company's magazine, with a full page picture of me, on stage talking, teaching and singing! And everything was written in Thai, so I have no idea whether they wrote down something good or bad! It's also in their company's website...
