I was in exactly the same situation a few months ago before i went to SE Asia, and all i can say is go!! We did meet people there who had there wallets/cameras stolen, but this happens everywhere. If you are careful with your things you wont need any of these extra security things - i didnt! Just keep important things on you, such as money and passport. If you can keep hold of them you are fine. We heard how people had left money in there main luggage which had then been opened and stolen whilst they slept on overnight coaches....again i could see how its possible as the drivers family often live on the coach next to your luggage...but just dont give them the oppurtunity to pinch it!
You should go, and dont worry about the problems.....cause its few and far between :)
