On a whim I booked a flight to Phuket - but everything that I've read so far about the place is making me regret that decision. Can anyone recommend nice places away from the touristic tackyness? Anyone know of any (self guided) treks or pleasant walks on the island?

I want to stay in a guesthouse with Wifi or ethernet cable in the room. Fan room preferred. Any recommendations?

We stayed in Hat Karon and it was lovely - not too touristy at all. Phuket town is also supposed to be nice. The most touristy area of Phuket is Patong, so stay away from that area if you want to avoid most of the tackiness. We hired a jeep and went out to some waterfalls and a Gibbon rehabilitation centre for the day;I'm sure there are some lovely walks in the area too. Also a trip to Khao Sok national park is worthwhile; your guesthouse should be able to arrange this for you.

I would recommend Diver's Inn; Wifi is available and each room is en suite with fan and air con.

Wow, that website said that the shuttle bus from the airport to Hat Karon is 1300Baht. I've never bought such an expensive bus ticket in Thailand. There and back it will be as much as my flight cost.

I'd heard there's a Tuk Tuk and bus mafia on Phuket - but didn't expect it to be so extortionate.

Oh well, too late to change my flight. I'll just have to make the best of Phuket. Wallow in the tourism for a few days, then move on to somewhere nicer. Any suggestions from anyone of connections to other places?
