Just wondering how you traveled about SE Asia? Which places did you go to? In what order? How did you travel? Would you have done anything differently looking back?
Starting to focus on our trip there next year but have no idea where to start! We will be entering from China....
Thanks for responses in advance
I started in Bangkok.... zipped down to see Ko Chang and over to Cambodia to see Ankor Wat.
Hit Koh PiPi and Phang-Nga to see Phang-Nga Bay without the hordes from Phuket.
Then cruised back up to Chang Mai and Chang Rai. I then took the slow boat to Laung Prabang. Laos, south to Vang Vieng, Vientiane then Savannakhet, East to Hue, Vietnam, then south along the coast with a side trip to Delat. I enjoyed Saigon and did a tour of the Mekong Delta and then took a ferry to Phu Quoc Island.
I had to go back to Saigon to hop a plane to Bangkok to catch my return flight to The States 8 weeks later.
It was a heck of a trip and great fun.
Best bits ~ Bangkok, Angkor Wat, riding bikes in the country side near Chang Mai, The Princess Mothers Garden near Chang Rai, chatting with people from all over the world for two days on the slow boat, LOVED Laung Prabang, wish I had hired a car so I could drive to Vang Vieng..truly enjoyed the old vs new in Savannakhet, I loved every part of Vietnam, I may go back one day to see what I have and toss in the north for good measure.
If your interested I have a blog full of pics.
We started in Hanoi, made our way down to the Mekong delta, took the boat to Phnom Penh, toured Cambodia, went to Laos via the 4000 islands in the Mekong. In Laos we went from south to north and entered Thailand in the north, making our way down to Bangkok (don't forget Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai!).
Then we took a flight to Manila, did North Luzon, Palawan, Bohol and finally took a flight from Davao, Mindanao to Sulawesi. Sulawesi north to south, then a flight to Bali, by ferry to Lombok and back, flight from Bali to Malaysian Borneo. We visited Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei. Via Kuala Lumpur back to Java (here we travelled mainly by train), afterwards Sumatra and back to Kuala Lumpur.
We toured mainland Malaysia, then took the train from KL to South Thailand, visiting some islands before going back to Bangkok and ending our SEA trip by taking a flight to South India!
I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I did, it was the time of my life!!!!
I got there through China, from Nanning to Hanoi and through the whole stretch to Saigon.
My friends proceeded to Laos. Well the next country from Saigon should definitely be Cambodia and then, yes Thailand, Laos and Myanmar and the Southern Thailand to Malaysia... and beyond.
I regret not taking a piece of Indonesia.
It was all land travel... I just met travellers and OFCOURSE, this forum helped a lot. I cant afford guide books. I ask travellers in the bus, about their accomodations... and I always ask travellers in hostel about rates and I get very lucky, I meet ultra cheap travellers.
My backpack is ready, I am hitting the road again.
