Hi,
planning a rtw trip Sept '10, heard someone mentione caxton fx card recently, looks good for short breaks but was just wondering if anyone had used it for year long trip to various destinations (I'm going India, SE Asia, South and Central America) would anyone recommend it or should i steer clear? Ta :)

I've looked into it and know a few people that have had. It doesn't look too bad and the feedback sounds ok(ish) too.
It's a prepaid card, so you can't go over your limit no matter how hard you try. If you load it with €5,000 and spend that amount without re-loading it, it'll stop working globally. It states 'no ATM charges' but I have heard that the rate it gives you can be beaten locally sometimes. That might be worth checking out, not with Caxton but with other users experiences on various websites.

Hi,

i'm going travelling in April 2010 and i currently work in FX and i don't think the prepaid cards are good for long, multiple country, journeys as you will get stuck with one rate of exchange for all your money where as if you have it in a nationwide flex account for example rates will be pretty much up to date with current market conditions and looking at it at the moment, rates are only going to go one way in the next few years, up! but if you have all your money stuck into USD for example and that has a crash then it devalues all your money. maybe go half and half with a english bank card and abit of money on the caxton card?!?

Hope your trip goes good!! Where you travelling to??

thanks for the info, yeah i thought that might be the case with the fixed rate...just been looking about for alternatives to flexaccount as they have now started charging (allbeit a small) fee to use abroad now, wondered if ther was anyhting better to use...

we've not booked flights yet (doing so in the new year) so route is still slightly flexible but planning on spending 5 months in India, doing south temples and beaches (Goa, Kerala) north to Rajastan, incorporating Nepal also seeing some of the main cities. SE Asia: LAos, cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, South America: Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Brazil (this is just written hurreidly in work so have probably missed some out, order may be wrong but you get the jist!) Where you going? April is soon! October seems a loooong way away at the moment!

N/wide only charge outside Europe. Inside Europe the card is still without charges, for ATM's and purchases.

My boyf and I are going...we've just wanted to go to India for years, it was originally going to be 6 months in India but figured that since we're going that far we might as well just take a year out and see the rest of the world too! Oz and NZ are places that we would like to see just other places are higher on my list...we have discussed possibility of doing year and a half and incorporating 6 months work in NZ or OZ but don't know how do-able that would be as most rtw tickets are year long...as you can tell our plans are still pretty flexible...i just can't wait!!!!
