I have a nice month off in Jan. and (I know it's busy season) am planning a sweet island hopping trip. Is the budget appropriate?

I plan to fly from LAX to American Samoa then hop to Western, then Fiji, possible Tonga, but mostly onto S.E. Asia.

What kind of accommodation are you thinking of staying in? I think it would be quite possible, but it depends on whether you are happy staying in dorms. And does that budget need to include airfares?

It includes everything.

Total airfare is about $2500 (round trip). Budget accomodations for private rooms run 30-75/night depending on which country. So then I would be looking at $1400 for the rooms (50/n), thats $3900 leaving $2100 for food/drink/etc. That's about $70/day budget not including major transportation and board.

The itinerary is:

LAX - Am. Samoa
Pago Pago - Apia, W. Samoa
Apia - Fiji
(Fiji - Tonga back to Fiji .. an extra $400+)
Fiji - Bali
Bali - Singapore
Singapore - Malaysia
Malaysia - Phuket/Ko Samui regions
Leave from Bangkok

Or does anyone know of a flight from Fiji or Samoa (maybe even New zealand) that flies direct to Tahiti/Bora Bora.

I think you might struggle finding private rooms in some places for $50/night. Then again, in SEA you shouldn't have much difficulty. You could always fall back on dorm beds towards the end and save a lot of money.

Tahiti and Fiji are probably the two places I'd imagine to be the priciest. In particular Tahiti has a very expensive reputation.

I'm not sure of direct flights from Fiji to Tahiti, but I do know that Air Tahiti Nui does offer some pretty reasonably priced flights in general. Worth having a look to see if that can help in your flight plans.
