I have a few questions.. My boyfriend and I are planning to leave from London in November (approx) next year to do some travelling through the US on our way back to Australia. I know its a year away but we want to plan - money wise..
We are going to buy a van with a bed in it and drive as much as possible.
What i wanted your thoughts on is;
Nov, Dec - is this still going to be an ok time of year to do this? Not too cold? We dont mind it being cold but the roads and all will be ok?
Where should we start? - We have family in a few places (NYC, Atlanta, Chicago, Savannah) so whaere is the best starting point? We basically want to see most major sights, so should we start in the middle and head outwards to either side of the coast and down, around the bottom and back up?
We plan to be away for 2 months (or so). we have already done some parts so we will be able to skip through some. Any help, tips or advice would be appreciated.
Buying the van is a good idea but plan on spending in access of $2000 because you want something reliable so you dont end up continually spending your money on fixing the thing I'd be looking for a full size Chevy or Ford van preferrably white Google "stealth camping",there is a forum member who can help people buy vehicles in the states,you might want to give him a call..vegasmike6Although with the handle of vegas you might have to travel to las Vegas to start your trip,which isnt a bad idea.
Nov-Dec is winter in most of the country and while there may not be any snow on the ground blizzards are always a potential from dec. onward November its just cold,traveling around the south would probably get you out of any threat of winter but if you plan on being anywhere north of Washinton DC temps have the potential to drop to the
Where to start? I'd get the northern part of your journey out of the way first so you dont have winter to deal with I'd go NYC to Chicago to Atlanta to Savannah then on to the beaches around the gulf coast starting around Panama city Florida and heading west from there.If coming from vegas do Chicago first.
How much will the trip cost?probably a lot more than your budget would say is reasonable but when it comes to a major memory of life damn the money because in the end all you'll have is your memories.

Thanks for your vote of confidence! I have helped TP members buy cars/vans in Vegas, only advice to those buying in other states. I agree with all you wrote. Hit the northern states first, prepare for cold temps. I once went 'leaf peeping' in New England. This was Oct. It can get pretty cold sleeping in a van w/o heat. It snowed on me in New York and I headed south that day! You need a good sleeping bag if you car camp in Nov-Dec. I did the stealth camping the whole way, from Vegas to New York and back! Too cheap to pay motel rates. Of course I was much younger then. Not sure I would do it that way now.
Hailly, send me a PM if you have questiosn.
