We're flying into LAX and plan to have a bit of a road trip for a couple of weeks.
A possibility would be hiring a car in LA and then flying out of Houston or Dallas. Is it possible to hire a car from one airport and return it to another. Has anyone done this? What companies are recommended? I know it is possible in Europe so hopefully it can be done with a national hire company in the US.
Thanks in advance.
This should be possible. Though not quite the US, I did this in Canada a few years ago. You'd be looking at the bigger organizations like Budget/AVIS etc. as smaller operators just wouldn't have the locations you're after.
Yes, this is certainly possible, but you do need to be aware that, in general, you will pay a large "drop-off" fee for returning your car to a location other than where you originally rented it. This fee usually ranges from $100 to (on rare occasions) up to $500.
My suggestion--get your quote before you arrive--and "lock" it in, so that the drop-off fee is minimized.
Go to Expedia.com or Orbitz.com and click the "Cars" tab to get price quotes for your plans. Car rental rates fluctuate depending on how far in advance you reserve and how much in demand the cars are at the time you rent. You should be able to get a general idea of how much it will cost. As was stated earlier, you can certainly drop off a rental car at a different location from were you picked it up, but it will generally cost you more to do so.
