In the summer i am going to travel and i would like to spend 7 weeks in the summer travelling thailand / malaysia and singapore.
I will be turning 18 though when i want to go, and when looking on this forum most people seem to be over twenty who travel.
Will i still find it easy to meet other people ? will people treat me different or will there be lots of people my age travelling?
any help or experiences would be grateful

Hi,

I don't know if you're going it alone or not but I think you're very brave to be doing this. I'm 25 and about to embark on my first trip, and its still scary. I wouldn't have had the confidence to do it when I was your age, and probably not the wits. But thats just me, and now I'm ready.

I think you start to see from this forum, that most travellers are a friendly bunch. Some may be older and had more life experiences, and some will be from different countries or backgrounds. However we'll all have the same thing in common- far away from home living out of a bag. So you'll all be in the same boat.

I'm sure there'll be people your own age doing gap years and stuff. But even if you don't meet them, its probably better for you to hang around with a mixed bunch, as you learn a lot from people's experiences etc.

I know I wouldn't have a problem with hanging around with an 18 year old. Blimey, us 20 somethings aren't that much older you know!!!

Good luck with your travels and take care!

Hi, My name's Alex, and I just got back from a years experience in Alaska, going to flight school and travelling around a bit too. My advise is, to go and try it out. I know there's tons of people your age and younger from Europe who travel all the time to different countries. And just as long as your hold on to your character, you'll find that what keeps people from travelling the most, isn't that they don't have the time or the money or whatever, the thing is most people fear travelling simply because of the unknown. It's famous for old men to say, man I wish I would have done that when I was younger, because now I know there's nothing to be afraid of. Don't worry about being brave, just make sure you look your fears strait in the eye, and question them to see if they're legitimate.
Cheers,
Alex

I was 17 when I went to Ireland for 9 weeks. But you can't compare that with travelling to Malaysia.

As long as u stick to some (very) important rules, u should be fine.

enjoy ur trip

rules:

dont walk around alone in the middle of the night!!!
wear the right clothes at the right places (thinking of religious places like churches etc.)
don't hitch hike
make sure ur passport/money etc.is safe
etc.

thats kind of my 'personal rules',although they seem quite logical to me and probably most people do the same...

Don't know why IRE is different, maybe bec for me it's not that far away, I knew the language, it's much smaller, the culture is different...and so on...

so the best is, to inform urself, before u go to a foreign country...
and of course u should make up ur own 'rules', becvause what suits me, doesnt have to suit u....;)

well when i was 18 the thought of going alone specially abroad would have scared the hell outta me altho i'm now only 19 i have picked up so much confidence thru working full time and have been for the past year and a half-in the big wide world!

-you've certainly got to have your wits about you thats for sure!good luck to you anyway but just be careful, being so young you may be very naive-i dont know you but as you get older you realise just how young you were when you look back a couple of years and your ways of thinking.

hope that all makes sense!

I sound old before my time!!

The First time I ever went away was when i was 18. I went on a round the world trip starting in china...I was so nervous before - but on the plane to Beijing I met someone who had worked there for years and he helped me put together an itinery...I ended up travelling round on my own for 3 months before heading overland to singapore.

I can honestly say it was the greatest experience of my life and I would recommend it to anyone who is capbable of looking after themselves - if your not grown up enough at the start you certainly will be by the end.
