Hi,
Im travelling to Thailand on boxing day for a month then on to Australia with my WHV for the rest of the year, im hoping to spend no more than a grand in Thailand, i will have around 6,000 GBP which is around $10,500. will i have enough to be comfortable for the year?? I already have my return ticket home. I am hoping to find work aswell so that i get my second year if i want to stay on. Plus i am travelling with my girlfriend who will have around the same amount as me.

Any help and advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks, Wayne

$10,500 at the 'average' rate of AUD $60/day (covering weekly transport, supermarket food and decent quality hostel accommodation) would last just under 6 months. Since you'll be able to share some costs by being together, I suspect the $21,000 shared between the two of you should last you about 8 months. If you live really frugally, you could stretch that another month or two; if you go out partying frequently and do many activities, it'll be gone much more swiftly. Since there's two of you, buying a car to take care of your transport will probably be a really good investment that'll help with stretching money.

So, be prepared for needing to work for a couple of months during the year. Also, consider asking each hostel you're staying at if they need cleaners; usually 2-3 hours of work a day will give you your accommodation for free, and so that's a great way to stretch your money while still having most of each day to see the places you're visiting.

This amount of money is quite a bit more than most people who head to Australia take with them, though, so in general I think you'll be in a really comfortable position. Just keep a good eye on your expenses, and be certain not to wait till the last moment with starting to look for work.
