Have to say, they might be good where you are, but United Airlines are just awful in Europe. Both for timekeeping and service (especially). Delta and A.A. sweep the floor with them for both.

If you are willing to go into an airport besides JFK (like Newark--EWR), you may be able to get to New York City just as quick and for even cheaper.

Using Kayak, I see tickets on either Delta or United from Sacramento, California to Newark, New Jersey for $140 one-way on December 14, 2009. (And you may be able to get these even cheaper on Priceline).

If you then go to this site:

and Enter From "Newark Airport Rail Station" and To "Penn Station New York"

you'll see that for $15 you can go from the airport to downtown New York in 30 minutes. It would take just as long to go from JFK Airport in New York to downtown New York--and will cost about the same as the NJ Railway.
