I'm planning to spend the 2nd half of August 2010 in Hawaii. I was thinking one week each in Oahu and Kauai.
The main reason for Kauai is a kayak day trip along the Na Pali coast. But I only have a daily budget of GBP50/US$80, which wouldn't even cover that trip.
I might not spend all my budget in the 4 months travelling beforehand but don't wanna count on it.
I would need to get some camping gear there and think about food options.
Is it realistic to even think about Kauai with such a budget?
Thank you for your input.
That's fine, it's just that you won't be staying at one of the finer resorts. Kauai is quite rural and underpopulated (probably the exact opposite of Oahu). Just one ? - how are you getting to the Na Pali area (helicopters are very $$$$$$)?
My friends are in the Hanalei area right now, and I'm dog-sitting at their place in Central Oregon while they're on vacation.
My buddy did a Kayak trip along the Na pali coast last year, the trouble he had was finding a kayak rental place that would let him go alone,he ended up going with a group,no idea what he paid but between kayak rental and campsite fees i'd imagine $80 will disappear fast.
The plan is to fly from Honolulu to Lihue and then take the bus to Hanalei, I don't mind walking and hitchhiking either.
Flight costs will be on top of the budget.
Joining a kayak tour would be the only option for me.
I went to Kauai by myself back in July, granted it was 2 nights by myself all in all I spent only around $400, that's including flight and car rental for 2 days.
I drove west coast and hiked the canyon the 1st day, slept in the car over night, drove around the west side the 2nd day, crashed at the hostel then flew back the next day to Oahu to meet some friends.
Hostel is around $22 a night. Meal you are looking for $10-15 per meal.
Overall I love that island and will certainly be back again.
Dont know how much were the helicopter/kayak rides but I'm pretty sure it's around $50+ for kayak and around $100 for 10-20min helicopter ride.

Yeah I was considering as well to rent a car and sleep in there.
I think I will decide closer to arrival time what to do, after all I'll have a better idea if I have more money to spend.
Thanks for all the advice.
