Here's what I found about our friend the semicolon:

"Use a semicolon when you link two independent clauses with no connecting words. For example:

I am going home; I intend to stay there."

They're seldom used anymore, except in listings that require more clarification than a comma. I tend to stick to commas and periods.

I really do like commas, though. Punctuation in general. Must be a work-related thing.

Well! Happy Birthday, Raven! and Many Happy Returns

I know what you mean- sometimes i think people at work are so rude expecting me to stop mucking about and get on with something! The cheek of it. I think I come to work now just so that I can surf the net and go on TP. But I really should do something, at least start clearing my desk (its so bad sometimes I lose my mouse) as i am leaving the day after tommorow! and might I add- going to Thailand two weeks after that! Yay!

Work is just an irritating necessity, gets in the way of real life.

And its practically Christmas and who really does any work at this time?!

Altogether now, after three....Jingle bells, jingle bells......

Ever wondered why people say "many happy returns"? Its one of those quaint old sayings that you never really think abowhere it came from.

...like sending someone to Coventry...thats very odd.

Quoting Lil Liz

I can cope with commas, although sometimes using them too much can make your sentences go on and on, when really, you should be breaking them up into smaller sentences with a full-stop, if you want to be clear, concise, and easily understandable, unlike this sentence.....
But it's semi-colons that are a mystery to me. I never have a clue what to do with a semi-colon; would this be an appropriate use?

;;

Sorry Lil Liz , however your first "sentence" above may actually be a "sentence run-on". Shouldn't "When Really .." be the start of a separate sentence?

Did someone call the comma police?! ;)

Actually, the comma is perfect where it is. "When really" connects one idea to the next in that sentence, and is not an idea unto itself.

I'd just change the comma to after "really", so that the "really" becomes a clause. Which is a fancy way to say the sentence would still make sence without the "really", and so it should be the item within commas.

And this is why I'm a writer and not an English teacher.

Here's one explanation:

As a punctuation mark, a colon (:)is used in writing and printing to show that what follows is an example, list or summary of what precedes it, or a contrasting idea.

A semi-colon is used bewteen a comma and full stop in value.
