Hi there

I need to travel from Cape Town to Los Angeles next september for a wedding. Does anyone know tif there are direct flights from anywhere in South Africa to anywhere in the United States? The only ones that I can find at present are via London and 28hours long!

Thanks for your help

Aoife

Delta Airlines flies directly between Johannesburg and Atlanta and South African Airways from Johannesburg to New York and Washington DC, at least according to the Johannesburg airport wiki page.
This can sometimes mean that it is direct but with a short stop (no change of planes though, those are not included in the list!). But maybe it is direct anyway.

You can fly with SAA (South African Airways) from NY or Washington to Cape Town and take DL connections within the states.

Ok, this might have changed very recently by adding new direct flights from Cape Town as well, but according to the always very up to dateCape Town airport wiki page there are no direct flights.

Hi

Agreed with everyone - direct flights are available on SAA to NY www.flysaa.com. I have flown JHB-NY and there is a 30min or so stop in Senegal for refueling. No need to get off the plane. A security check is done though - but that is as direct as they get.

Delta does a partnership with BA/SAA (can't remember) on a direct flight from JHB to DC. A friend flew it and there was also no need to get off the plane.

JHB-NY was an 18hr flight - much better than changing flights at Heathrow and taking a 28hr trip.

Good-luck.

As others have said, there is a service via London with BA, but some of the connections mean a total flight time of over 38 hours and something like 11,000 miles. The flights are quite cheap, starting at just £400 return, I think that's about 5,000+ Rand, including tax etc. I don't know what the USA and SA airlines offer, but quite honestly at twice the price if it takes less than 1/2 the time, I'd splash out.
Can you imagine missing the connection at LHR? Oh just the thought of the pain.
