Whats the average of a small room in this place?

I have been three times, but I totally forget the rates.

Has anyone ever tried the YHA hostels in HK?

Are there hostels in Lantau island???

Have you tried checking the prices here? I did an availability search for 1 December, zoomed in on Chunking mansion and clicked the 'order by Distance' button (there's about 30 properties listed here with Chunking as the address). Price per person per night seems to start around 7 USD and go up to 20'ish, mostly in dorms. A single (with your own bathroom) in the Apple hostel costs 26 USD. I didn't check many, but sure you can find more with single privates around that rate.

No hostels listed here for Lantau, though there's the budget hotel Silvermine Beach.

Chungking Mansion has a range of properties and many of them are available on Travellerspoint booking page. All of them are more or less the same. The rooms are extremely small but private single rooms are easily available for around 20-30 USD. I stayed in one Singh guest house sometime back and it cost me around 35 USD for a double.
The entrance is a bit intimidating with agents of many of the guesthouses eagerly awaiting to pounce on the guests. But simply the directions as given in ur booking confirmation and proceed to the correct block(A-E).

The Chungking Mansions are cupboards masquerading as habitable. I stayed there a few times in the early nineties and they were talking about them as fire traps in those days.

Last year I stayed at the Metropole Hotel in Mong Kok, Kowloon, (a few minutes walk from the MK subway station). A nice big room in a quiet area for $50 a night.

Chungking had a facelift, well, I only saw the ground floor three times this week... It looked Cleaner... the money Changers probably renovated their offices or whatever you would call their windows.

But I made a mistake of staying somplace tha called itself a hostel... Its a small apartment with many room, Chungking style, only cleaner... But I wanted the hostel ambiance. I thought 144 for a dorm of 8 people was going to be a real hostel... It was just too expensive. I should have gone to Mirador and look for that 60 dollar dorm room.
