We are going to Japan in December and want to get a week long rail pass but I need some advice.

1) Where is the best place to get the pass
2) What are the restrictions
3) Do they cover any city travel like buses or under ground trains.

Any advice or help really appreciated.

I bought my pass from Trailfinders in the UK at the same time I bought my flight ticket; any travel agent should be able to arrange it for you though.

Unless this has changed (it's a few years since I was in Japan) you can use the pass on all Shinkansen (bullet) trains apart from the fastest one, and you can't use it on the Tokyo underground. You can use it on local trains within the Tokyo area; the Yamamoto line is useful for getting around the city.

u can buy 5000 Yen pass or for less than that available in vending machines at the stations... usually used to cost me an average 160 to 200 yen per trip(2 yrs back)... You can use it in most of the lines in Tokyo(if im right on other city metro's as well)... There are also private rail routes(mostly to outer cities) as well which offers you round trip passes to and fro from Tokyo... Like for Hakone or Nikko with which you can plan your trip to those places...
