Peter, that other accomm thing we're working on right now should boost character count quite a bit too, right?! :)

I noticed when trying to look for accommodation tables, the USA has got hundeds of more options now, but many of them are (still) blank. Does that have something to do with the boost character?
Also, there are many of which have several ways of spelling but are all in there. I thought it was related on having accommodations which can actually be booked here on TP?

Yes, it should be related to cities with accommodation. It's possible a bug has crept in since we've been making lots of changes in the accommodation area lately and pulling in a lot of new properties and cities as well. Still, there shouldn't be any cities with no properties in that list. Will need to investigate.

There surely is a bug:
Some examples:

  • Again: there are hundreds of new places, mainly in the USA which are in the list, but accom table is blank
  • It seems to add larger regions. For example go to Canada, accom table and there you will see Alberta and British Columbia for example. Unfortunately blank pages
  • A strange example: went to Hungary accom table, looking for Budapest and just above Budapest were Bremerhaven and Berlin (region). Now I know sometimes I drink too much..but...

Just fixed this problem. I think something changed when the database was upgraded, since it was just the usual query that stopped working properly. Quite weird.

Rightio, I've submitted my thesis and I'm back. Going to start working on updating some travel guides in the next few weeks, so anything that I should know/be aware of before plunging in? Any other issues apart from the generation of accommodation table?

Well done on your thesis!! That's got to be a satisfying feeling!

No particular issues to keep an eye on right now. Things are fairly busy in the guide at the moment, which is nice. I think Feb will be a good month for contributions!

As far as getting the maximum number of characters out of contributions - Utrecht mentioned this before - the most effective way of doing this is by actually creating new characters from the Popular Places Without Articles project. Those are all places which have some accommodation listings, which bumps things up and of course the basic template structure itself bumps things up as well. Kind of feels like a cheat, but hey - these articles are actually usually well worth creating as well! So if there's any in that list that you have particular knowledge about, they are excellent candidates for some work.

Thanks for the fix Peter

And welcome back Lil

Like Peter mentioned, I think the last week or so saw several hundreds of thousands of characters added to the guide, we are close to 16 million and I think 18 million is possible by the end of March.

I have actually started to create some article templates of cities including accom tables of the more useful cities which are mentioned in other article as well. For example Burgas and Varna, which have links in other articles because there are quite a few flights towards those places from other cities in Europe.
I won't start to many, but at least the most important ones, listed as cities on the main country page already.

I've been drafted by my aunt to help her business paperwork stuff (while she goes on holiday, tsk tsk) but I'm starting to write some guide again too. However, my effort is paltry for now in comparison to the good work of Utrecht and Herr Bert. Ah sure, some contribution is better than none, and the current character count is certainly looking very promising indeed
