However, my effort is paltry for now in comparison to the good work of Utrecht and Herr Bert. Ah sure, some contribution is better than none, and the current character count is certainly looking very promising indeed

Thanks Lil. Well, at least yours is better quality, than our dutchy english

Hey!! speak for yourself.

Herr Bert
(ads Spanglish to that list)

P.S. I worked on and off, on the guide for the last 2 ? years, so just keep it up, and the count is not completely real, as it includes the accommodation tables as well, which are not really hard work.

You mean you didn't manually add all the ho(s)tels

yes, but adding 200, or 300 characters every two minutes (and sometimes much more), pressing a few buttons, copy and paste, is not really the same as writing, checking, correct, rewrite and post something.

Nonetheless, you're adding stuff on, which is something. And you're spending time on them, so that counts too!

Writing and fact checking does take up considerable time, even if you live within a city, considering the economic downturn which brings forth places closing down, or public transport costs changing etc but it's satisfying too, to know that things are as accurate as it can be for the use of the next travellers.

Ps: geeky confession - I used to even "fact check" the addresses for accommodation , for area guide, to make sure the places are within the areas. Afterall I can't generate tables according to areas, just by the city.

It's now April 20th...

Any information on total characters and hippo rollers to be donated??

(Not taking the time to contact my alter ego to ask the question.)

If I remeber correctly, I was mentioned in the latest April TP newsletter.
We reached 17 million characters, so a total of 7 rollers will be donated! Too bad it couldn't be 63 (or 2 more which I promised when we would reach 20 million characters). Time for a new challenge now;)

See, just shows that my other alter ego should read the newsletter!! (And so should I for that matter. I did - just had a brain fart... It happens... More often that I would like...)

But, thank you for the response and 7 will make a village or more very happy!!

I agree - new challenge!! (How can we challenge members to write TU articles?? Put your thinking cap on, Michael! Okay, it's not wiki-related but it could be.) ;)

Me think torturing them if they don't write one will do, don't you think

How about a competition where say writing a blog entry for TU or minimum 1000 characters in the wiki is the only way to win? Prize could be something rather desired, like an iPad perhaps...

My other thought, and I've actually already written the code for this some months ago, is to ask people to email in/tweet their favourite restaurant in their home city. Those are rather short entries of course, but seeing how easy it is to do, and it doesn't require signing up on TP, I think it might gain some traction. There's a bit of an issue with knowing which ones actually get in or not, but nothing more serious than saying that any official insertion into the guide actually has to be sanctioned by a real TP user.
