LSucettes: That is absolutely the best explanation of danger in Mexico that I have read on the Internet. Thanks for taking the time to write it. On forums such as this, posters lose sight of the fact that this is, after all, a travelers' forum. In talkng to upper/middle class Mexicans here in Oaxaca, I've heard there certainly is a kidnapping problem. However, as you pointed out, tourists are NOT targets. Too risky. Too complicated. There was a scam at the Mexico City airport ATMS awhile ago of people being pulled into cars after withdrawal (Mexicans and foreigners, I believe), but as far as I know this was quickly stopped by increased police presence (due to Internet postings.) Ya gotta kind of feel sorry for the scammers these days. Word travels so far and wide so quickly, that they are lucky to get in a few "hits" before savvy travelers and the public at large are aware of them.

Since our problems in 2006, I am noticing a much different kind of traveler here. I have no statistics to support it, but it seems to me as if people coming here lately dress much more appropriately, are more experienced travelers or at least have done some research about what to expect. This is what Yamahu is doing and I laud him. It sounds as if countries like Mexico aren't suitable for him right now, and learning that without getting into a "fix" while traveling is one of the positives of Internet information.

If there are no prey, there will be no predators. And that's different that blaming the victim.

[quote=yamahu]This is copy of text I have find here:
http://www.voyage.gc.ca/countries_pays/report_rapport-eng.asp?id=184000

"Canadians travelling to Mexico should exercise a high degree of caution due to occasional demonstrations and protests, high levels of criminal activity and violence throughout the country"

I'm really really worry to go there.

The Foreign Office in the UK warns Brits about the Canadian cities of Winnipeg and Saskatoon, warning of ''Crime, pickpocketing, prostitution, theft'' etc.... I've done them both a few times and found them safer than London !
If you believe everything you read, you'd go nowhere and be forever stocking up with toilet paper.

My next door neighbors have just returned from their third trip to Mexico this year. Two of these were to Cabo San Lucas and one was to Puerto Vallarta.

All I can say is that I'm envious and can't wait to get back to Mexico soon myself. And, no, I have no fear about them contracting H1N1 while in Mexico and giving it to me or my family. I'm actually more worried about getting H1N1 by going to my work (which is at a school district--and therefore exposes me to many young children) or visiting my other neighbor (who works for a hospital) than I am about getting this from my travelling neighbors.
