You guys are absolutely brave. I mean although I like being in the window seat, I always keep the blinds or curtains closed. kinda scared of heights but one of the greatest views that I have seen from an aircraft window is bora bora... its is kinda peaceful

Brave? I'm terrified of heights; a bar-stool is as high as I go. But for some reason distances (as opposed to heights) I experience in an aircraft don't bother me in the slightest.

Maybe it's to do with the alienation from the ground or the excitement of travel or something else completly different but suffice to say, if I don't get a window seat I'm not a happy flier.

As for Bora Bora... that I'd like to see.

Loads to choose from, but the one that stands out the most is when flying from Singapore to Auckland - an evening/overnight flight. I was sitting in the 2nd to last row, where the seats go from three down to two on the sides (you get a bit of space between you and the fuselage to store stuff ;)). I was on the starboard side of the plane and out the window I saw the most stunning electrical display over (I guess) northern Australia. Lightning was going down to the ground as well as between clouds. With noise cancelling headphones on blocking out all the plane noise and the plane being in darkness, it was just truely mesmerising...

The best view I had is probably the view of all the small islands in front of the coast in Finland, on a flight from Dusseldorf to Helsinki. On one flight from Dusseldorf to Madrid, we first flew over my old hometown, which was nice, but for a large part of the trip in between these huge white clouts which were like valleys in the sky. (sometimes a bit bumpy if one of these 'valleys' turned out to be a dead end street.

On a flight from Madrid to Granada the best view I had was the one of the airport building in Granada, meaning that we landed safety after a rollercoaster ride. Funny enough it was sunny in Granada, while at take off I saw the lightning in the distance.

Copacaban beach and the statue of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer).

Also, the pyramids of Cairo.

I have two, both from when I was little. The first was flying over my home suburb on the way to Perth Airport...seeing the lights of the road I will be travelling along to get home and the local swimming pool. The second was flying through a storm and seeing lightning everywhere. Probably should have been scared in hindsight but just thought it was awesome!!!

It would have to be a transatlantic flight from Canada to France, I didn't sleep the whole night, but after being on the plane for close to 6 hours I looked out the window to see the most beautiful and a tangerine sunrise over the clouds. It was truly magic, it marked a new beginning as I started a 6 month exchange program living away from home for the first time.

This thread is a really great read!

All my favourite moments are from trips to the USA -

Flying into Vegas at night. It was just awesome. Complete blackness, up, down, left and right, as far as the eye could see...then suddenly this oasis of neon just appears in the middle of it!

Flying over Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon.

Flying over Greenland.

And also flying over San Francisco and the Bay Area. It was like viewing it on Google Earth, it was amazing, you could see the Golden Gate, the Bay Bridge, everything. As the plane circled round I had my nose pressed to the glass, enthralled. Simply a stunning part of the world, from the air and the ground.

What a question, I havent even had a chance to read half the responses, but I think my favourite, its the one I remember most vividly, was flying into Rio de Janeiro just at the start of my world trip, early in the morning, just seeing the hills dotted between the sprawl of the urban, the sea ... lost my pics though because my memory card broke :(

Many many years ago, returning from Amsterdam to NYC on a Pan American 747, I looked out the window to find myself directly above the hook of Cape Cod. The sight was so clear, and I immediately knew where we were. This was a sight I will always remember.
