what should we be aware of?
We wanna make sure we have as much fun as possible.
We intend to go there roughly mid march because apparently thats when the carnage starts!
We are looking for somewhere cheap and chearful to stay but don't wanna get caught out with a rat infested hole.
Will we need to brush up on the old Spainish?
Is mid march the best time to go?

March should be a lovely time. I live in New Orleans, only a short flight from that part of Mexico and have been there many times. I personally don't like Cancun because it is so built up and Disney-esque, but students/young adults love the party atmosphere, lots of clubs and restaurants, and gazing at scantily clad beautiful bodies.
There are so many hotels to choose from, I am certain you can find one with the basic amenities in your price range. The travel forums at www.fodors.com are very good. You might check there if you don't get specific hotel recommendations here.
While you're there, you might consider side trips to Tulum which has Mayan ruins in a spectacular coastal location, Xel-ha (pronounced Shell-ha if I remember correctly) for great snorkeling/diving, Cozumel for more great diving, and Isla Mujeres, a lovely island easily reachable by bus and ferry.
Cancun is so very touristy that you shouldn't need much Spanish but as always locals seem appreciative if you know the basic greetings and etiquette phrases. Have fun!

Hi!

Tulum is a really good advice! There are some huts, a few hundred meters south of the ruins, where it is nice and really cheap to stay. I can’t remember the names, but the huts closest to the pyramids are not the best ones. The ones a bit more to the south are much better, nicer and safer.

If you just stay around Yucatán (that’s the area around Cancún) and you want to get good advice where to go, where to stay, buy the Lonely Planet for that area. It’s absolutely the best travel guide!!!

Enjoy your trip!
