Thank you all for your suggestions!
As I was not in touch with the Internet world (tied up with hectic schedules), I couldn't respond.

Well, my friend has not yet decided the place; but she has some interests in either India or Egypt or "ONLY" the Himalayas and near by places or S.Africa...

Any thoughts?

Katie

One month is a very good timeframe for Egypt. She could even combine Egypt with one week in Jordan seeing Petra or do a side trip to Jerusalem if she is so inclined.

Egypt is very easy to travel in for a first timer as long as you got a decent guidebook (almost everybody I saw had the LP Egypt). It is practically a kindergarden for backpackers because there are so many budget hotels there and many many English-speaking touts - touts who help you find a hostel in the dead of the night, get you in touch with a tour guide or the captain of a felucca, etc etc. Single western women need to be aware of the rules for dress and behaviour in a pre-dominantly muslim country, but otherwise it is no big deal.

India would also be great, but I have no personal experience there. I just know that to see the whole of India she would need a lot more time than just one month.

Indonesia would be a good choice, very inexspensive and heaps to see and do!

Thailand or Indochina would be my rec - life is so easy going there, prices low and generally very happy people full of smiles + thousands of fellow travelers (who wants to go to a cold country where there are few fellow travelers?) The food is also excellent.

I would vote for VietNam or Thailand. Both are easy to navigate on your own, plenty to see and not expensive.

As you are from Canada go somewhere very sunny, Queensland coast is amazing!
I also agree with thailand.

Thanks for the valuable suggestions; but Vietnam or Thailand are not in my friend's choice of places.

But for a month's time we are planning for a long distance (a really long distance) travel (to try something new)...
