WOW!!! I didn't know France was THAT popular. I guess I have to go! 75 mil can't be wrong!
whats missing from the list is
its swarming with tourists aswell...
destinations being //
a must visit country..
China aims to attract 210 million overseas visitors annually by 2020, more than double the current figure, a top tourism official said in Shanghai yesterday.
By the same year, China will become the world's No. 1 tourism destination in terms of the number of inbound travelers, and the fourth-largest country for outbound tourists, according to a forecast by the World Tourism Organization
It's quite interesting.. I'm surprised the US ranks so high, although I suspect a lot of those aren't tourist, but rather people going to conferences / meetings etc ..
Europe has a distinct advantage due to the ease of travel around there.. There are so many Europeans who go travelling throughout Europe in their summer / winter holidays that it is very easy to understand. And as far as France being at the top - it's no great surprise! It has what must be the ultimate tourist attraction with Paris and the Eiffel Tower. And all those shopping day trippers from Britain buying cheap liquor probably accounts for a couple of million
Australia is nowhere to be seen - I looked up their stats and it is a measly 5 million or so! I guess the distance is quite prohibitive for most.
I think there is also a subtle but definite difference between 'popular' and 'most visited'.
Anybody any idea how this thing was calculated???? It seems very strange, and the numbers also seem on the low side for many countries.
Would never have guessed Poland, Austria, Hungary would have been anywhere near that high considering some of the places that are missing (For example, Amsterdam Schipol airport alone has more than 36million passengers a year, with a popn of only 16mil).
Also Russia is a little high to me, considering the effort it takes to actually get into the country. Canada also seems to be a surprisingly large number in comparison to some of the other places on the list, despite it's obvious attractions. On the flipside, i'd have guessed the US to be considerably higher in terms of numbers of visitors.
