Goodness knows what it used to be like then...

Could practically walk across it.

Yeah. I was once told that if you fell in the Thames, the chances were you'd die of typhoid before you drowned.

Hmmm.

I'm sure there isn't a definitive worst. Most places that initially appear rough have their hidden benefits, like friendliness or a particular cultural thing. I can't stand Glasgow but lots of my friends love it, it's the music scene and the theatre or something. Coventry is pretty bad, but the folk are dead nice in my experience. I personally couldn't stand Lille, I'm not sure why. Or Mannheim, which just seemed like a big pile of factories though maybe I was looking at it from the wrong angle.

But Leo, surely 'When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life', no?

My nomination for the worst place to be in in Europe: 12th District City Hospital in Kiev, Ukraine. I have really really bad memories of this place, especially of the sanitary conditions and the available supplies (or better the lack thereof).

You obviously haven't done an Essex hospital lately then ! ! :(

Any time a river has large bins placed throughout it to collect garbage, you know it must be filthy! Though, I love London.

Fact is, it's one of the cleanest rivers in the world, though the colour of the water (tidal silt) suggests otherwise.

Gotta say, the river in Rejkavik is so clean that you can drink directly from it.
I hardly think the Thames compares. 'One of the cleanest rivers in the world' huh? Then go drink some of it, untreated. Oh my stomach churns just with the thought.

Someone once told me of the saying.. 'See Naples and die'. It was so smelly on that July day when we were there, that many people could possibly have done.

I just get tired walking in London cos of all the fumes and lack of air. Not tired of life, not at all. Just tired when in London.

I not comparing it - and no, I wouldn't drink from it either, or most other places come to that.

Seriously though, London's an easy target for assumptions. Dirty river, crime, unfriendly, fog.

Ah Lake Balaton, Hungary. Beautiful scenery, delicious food, cheap and tasty wines, historical wonders.... And in Summer you even get tens of thousands of rude, drunken German visitors.

Sorry, but I am not generalising that all Germans who travel to Lake Balton are in the above categories but I can tell you an awful lot of them are. Ruined my trip to Kezhtely and Balatofured completely with their obnoxious beahaviour.

So often the British and the Irish get slated for ruining destinations but believe me the Germans who visit Lake Balaton are every bit as bad. So for me it has to be Lake Balaton in high summer.

Sorry in advance for anyone I am bound to upset.
