The day before thanksgiving....
The Boss: "work is closing from Dec. 23-Jan 4th because it's slow."
Me: "Cool, I'll go to Ireland!"
The Airline: "We're gonna raise ticket prices 60% because, well...because we can."
Me: "...Ok Airline but only because I don't have to pay for accommodation."
The Airline: "ok smart guy..."
Me: "Are you gonna be around? I'll book a flight!"
The Girl: "ah com'ere. Sounds Grand! It'll be great Craic to be sure!xoxo"
Me: "I'll wait till tomorrow to buy a ticket, I have to go spend the time with the family. See you in a month!xoxo"
Me: "One round trip ticket please!"
The Airline: "Oh did we say 70% before? We meant to say that......it's double the normal price."
Me: "I hate you."
seriously though how are price hikes like this legal?
As a back-up plan I thought, "maybe I'll just go to miami." But even that is around $800 when it's normally $150! That's shameful, criminal even!
So now I'll probably be in the Philly area like the previous 27 New Years of my life.
Are you serious, this is holiday peak season, and you're trying to buy at the last minute!!!
well normally it's $500. Then I was fine with a flight being $800 but then the very next day (8 hours later) that same flight cost $1200!! in this economy? who's buying these seats?
Don't think it only happens in your country. It's criminal, ain't it.
In Britain the likes of Easyjet, Ryanair, Jet2 and Wizzair charge pennies for one way flights all year round. Correction, all year round except school/public holidays. Then, for no real reason except, as you rightly point out, they can, a one way from any airport in the country to (for example) Amsterdam goes up from £20 to anything from £80 to £140.
I just avoid every airport on the planet between around the 20th Dec. and 5th Jan. unless the company's paying.
Funny how the price of airline tickets go through the roof, but the cost of a bus ticket, rail ticket and hire car stays the same. And for some reason the price of many beers and wines in the shops goes down 50% over the festive season.
I say let's have a revolution. Then again, if we arranged it over the Christmas period, nobody could afford to attend.

Still thinking about that, I figure gas should be about $280ish both ways. then there's tolls, accommodation. maybe stop in myrtle beach and savannah along the way.
I'll think about it
There's the holiday season and in general, the worst time to buy a plane ticket is the weekend because the price almost always goes up Friday. It's better to buy tickets Tuesday night into Wednesday when many airlines put their competitive prices back on. Not an absolute rule but seems to be often true.
