Buying a car in california for a non US citizen

Travel Forums North America Buying a car in california for a non US citizen

My friend and I are planning a road trip from California to South America.

We're from Australia and would like to know if it is possible to buy, register and insure a car in california for a non US citizen?

I've read a lot of things on the internet and its not very clear. Some say you can buy it but you need a US license to insure it. Others say that you need a social security number.

We don't have an address in California until we travel there and then it will just be a hostel, doesn anyone know if this will be a problem?

Any information would be helpful

You might want to have a plan B as without a permanent address you will probably have a problem..

Personnally i'd take a bus to the major cities and rent a car for local site seeing.

If you check older post under this forum, you can read my detailed post on this topic. It is pretty easy here in Nevada. I have helped 4 separate TP members buy cars/vans here in Vegas. Takes 1 day. You can use your own DL or International DL, no SS number needed, you do need a local address for title and insurance.

Send me a PM if you want help buying in Las Vegas.
