Station wagon/tent sounds good - or a small 'commercial' van.

If it doesn't look like a 'camper' van, you can park anywhere.;)

Just an update for some more advice, we are now staying with my dad for the first month in sydney so would it be more advisable for hostels cause we may be staying at some of my families houses through the other months, so is hostel the way to go if its only for about 2months?

i have done both long this coast line and they are both totally different experiances, personally i loved the freedom and adventure of having you own vehicle, nothing really compares to waking up next to the ocean. choose your vehicle wisely, if you have little mechanical knowledge renting maybe the better option.

I'd say it would be cheaper to rent your own campervan. considering that you wouldn't have to pay for your stay at a hotel or something. most campervans allow you to cook anyways and cooking for your own, specially if you are with some people, cheaper. eating out every once in a while can also happen.

With a £3,000 budget is renting really an option? Cause we would be going up and then back down the east coast and i think renting would be very expensive, possibly more expensive than hostels
