Quoting socalexplorer

dude, you're killing me! i count 75, that's quite impressive, i have 43, (would be 44 if i count hong kong but that's not a country). planning on picking up turkey and a bunch of the balkans this summer so i should be at 50 but 75 is quite the accomplishment.

Heh. I was up to 80 so I've forgotten somewhere. :-)

I realised that the numbers don't matter, that's just ticking. If you're going to say "Well, I've been to 120 countries and I think..." - surely you'd get just as much impact saying "Well, I've been to 48 countries and I think...".

Ticking is also unfair - Scotland deserves to be a tick as it is, to me, quite a distinct experience from England. But lots of people wouldn't count it. Similarly HK, Macau. Not Wales. ;-) But then Novosibirsk is going to be very different to St Petersburg, or a cruise touching at Flåm is a very different day to one in Oslo, so a country count only means so much. Travel is hard to measure.

I have friends who won't take a trip if they've already been to a country, as they want "new". Okay you may want to visit some new towns but every travel experience is new and different.

The balkans are on my to-do list. But I still feel there are so many obvious places I've not found time to visit. Australia. South America proper. Moscow! (Remedying that at Easter.) India. Japan. ... Ah well, I'd better get off to the day job...

Well said Andyf.

It's still fun to check the count, and we can check our own here on TP as well, if properly naming all trips you took. Mine is here: travel stats. Seems like 93 countries, but it's a matter of what you consider countries. Whole discussions on the web, but I usually also check wikipedia for lists, which has lists for independent countries, list for non-independent countries and overseas territories (I mean French Polynesia is not really France is it...;)) and even lists with countries which are almost not recognized by any other country (Nagorno Karakabh, Abkhazia, Transdnjestria etc).

It's just about border and that's why I think you said it well. Europe is as big as the USA or Australia and of course with over 50 countries it's pretty diverse regarding cultures, people, languages, food etc. But regarding nature, I might even say that the USA is more diverse and that's just one country.

I tend to like the idea of Cyberia, as it depends hugely if you really experienced countries by doing nothing or travelling around. But even visiting just one places for a long time might give you more perception of the country than visiting 10 in a rush. And tours are a bit of a discussion: I used one for North Korea (no other option really lol), but you keep travelling with all those other travellers really limiting perspectives.
And finally there is that discussion about what is the reall....fill in accordingly. Is Amsterdam the real Netherlands? It might not be the way the Netherlands is as a whole but it is definately the real Netherlands, just like any small village in the rural north.

Cheers and happy travels!
Michael.
