Hi SvEnI:
I was in Amsterdam last March. Its amazing. I stayed at The Flying Pig youth hostel. Its right by the main train station, close to the red light district and had the most amazing time. If you can't decide now, there are little stores that will help you find a suitable place to stay based on your budget. I stayed at a nice hotel ( 4 stars) my last night there that I found through them and It was only a few dollars more than I was paying for a hostel. Just depends on the kind of experience you want. Good Luck and Have FUN.

Definitely would recommend the flying pig. It's definitely the most popular hostel in Amsterdam if I can believe the bookings we get for it (get the one on Nieuwenmarkt as there are two now I believe) and ranks among the top 5 in Europe year in, year out as well.

Plenty of hotels and such too but I have always found them to be a lot more expensive than the hostels. Erin, you must have really got a good deal (or were there more people staying in the room together?)!

The Flying Pig Downtown. Best place i've stayed in yet in the Dam.

Since all of you speak so highly of The Flying Pig, I think I`ll go for that one.
Thanks a lot.

there is a Scheller hotel somewhere behind the red light area, that place is really neat. 4 stars, and only costed me 30euro/night. and I remember there are many great cafe can check that out..however, I am not so sure about the spelling:D

Now I`m booked at the Flying Pig Downtown, so I hope you guys are right. Unfortunately I couldn`t book my whole stay there, they where fully booked for Saturday. But I guess there are plenty of places for a handsome young norwegian.

Thanks again for help, both to those who posted here, and the ones that have sent me mail.
