I am due to start work in a retail shop on a cruise liner in the Caribbean and I was looking for some advice/tips/help please as I still have lots of questions/concerns. If anyone could help it would be most appreciated.

I've tried to do some research to see what life will be like whilst I'm working, so far it looks like I'll be able to mingle with the passengers on days off and visit all the ports as the shop is shut during this time. the biggest questions I've got is what the best way to keep in touch with home is? Will there be phones that I can use and will I have to pay for them, if so are they expensive? Will there be internet access if so again do i have to pay and is it expensive? Will I be able to take my phone if so will I be able to use it and will it cost me more?

I was thinking of taking my laptop with me, but is this advisable or should I not take expensive personal equipment? If I do take my laptop will I be able to access internet from my cabin and will it be free? Otherwise is it worth taking my I-phone that way could I use the internet on it for free and have music and phone home etc? Or will I even have access to my network to use that? Will I be bored and so is it worth taking a Nintendo DS or something?

I'm not speaking from personal experience, but having had some dealings with shipping companies and the way they do business, I wouldn't expect any amenities besides salary, fare and board. I suppose the ship will have internet/phones, but you're likely to pay the same as the guests (which I guess will be an expensive rate). Better do your communications at the ports, probably cheaper. Theft of expensive personal equipment is probably at your own risk, so I wouldn't take any, besides Nintendo and IPod to fight boredom.

It depends on which cruise ship you will be working in. There are quite a number of cruise ships who has internet available on board for both passengers and staff. of course for the staff, it has to be in schedule and in moderation. for phone calls, most of the vessels that I have boarded can only give you that if you will pay... some allows cellphone but of course not during duty.

Congrats. I used to work for Princess and new some shipboard folks. They found their jobs very demanding and challenging but also rewarding and time off tends to come in big chunks so you can really soak it up. I'm actually a little jealous! :)
