I heard somewhere and it could have been on a blog or forum, that you needed to take your passport along if you wanted to fly anywhere in Australia from one domestic airport to another. I presume this was something to do with the security situation.

As I am intending to fly from Sydney to Perth in the new year, and as I am a UK citizen, do I need to take my UK passport, and who wants to see it anyway?

You usually need to show photo ID, so it's not usually necessary to show a passport unless that is all you have which is acceptable to them.

You need a photo ID acceptable to the airline. Check with your carrier what their requirements are.
