And again, according to www.atlapedia.com China is around 9.596 million sq. Km's while the USA is 9.372 million...

Does anyone know which is the most densely populated country and which is the least...

Compare Hong Kong, which has 5,456 persons per sq. Km, with Australia, which has 2.3 persons per sq. Km (altho I didnt realise you could get .3 of a person... )

Atlapedia's information is pretty old, some as old as 1980!

Anyway, I believe the most densely and least densely populated countries are:

  • Hong Kong @ 6,277 persons/sq.km
    (Population: 6,855,125 - July 2004 est.)
  • Greenland @ 0.02 person/sq.km
    (Population 56,000 - July 2004 est.)

I agree, some of it is pretty old, but some of it is quite recent altho not as recent as 2004...

I have seen that CIA Wold Factbook website before, but had forgotten about it for some reason, even tho it's in my favourites...

Thanx for reminding me... I looked on Atlapedia for the population density of Greenland, but it didn't give it... I guess I could have always gotten out my old abacus and worked it out...

According to the CIA World Factbook anyway, the United States is 9,631,418 Sq. Km's and China is 9,596,960 Sq. Km's... So not a great deal in it, about 35,000 Sq Km's... But when you're talking about 9.6 million, it's a small fry...

Correction to the above standings.

The most densely populated country is Macau, followed by Monaco, while Hong Kong came in third.

  • Macau @ 17,531 persons/sq.km
    - Population: 445,286 - July 2004 est.
    - Area: 25.4 sq.km

  • Monaco @ 16,549 persons/sq.km
    - Population: 32,270 - July 2004 est.
    - Area: 1.95 sq.km

  • Hong Kong @ 6,277 persons/sq.km
    - Population: 6,855,125 - July 2002 est.
    - Area: 1,092 sq.km

Greenland remains the least densely populated country.

  • Greenland @ 0.02 person/sq.km
    - Population 56,000 - July 2004 est.
    - Area: 2,166,086 sq.km

Interestingly enough, the CIA factbook lists the USA as larger than China Countries ranked by order.

Generally which comes top of China and the US depends on how they count Taiwan (in particular) but also American dependencies like Puerto Rico, so the ranking is generally based upon the political background of the country/person compiling the list.

Virtually every source will have slightly different numbers depending when & how it's calculated. I tend to treat them as the same, except to my American colleagues, in which case China is definitely bigger...
