The 'Which Anti-malarials?' decision?...

Travel Forums General Talk The 'Which Anti-malarials?' decision?...

Am going to be in Thailand and India for 10-12 weeks and have been advised by docs to take anti-malarials.

Previously I took anti-malarials for a 4week trip in Thailand, Malarone, with no side effects, just the £150 it left my pocket short of.

Does anyone recommend alternatives to Malarone, preferably cheaper and with least possoble side effects.

Anyone have experience of Doxcycycline? cheap and cheerful i have been told?

Any help would be great!!!!

Andy

Doxycycline is an option.
The downsides are the need for daily use ( similar to Malarone), a slightly higher risk of side effects than Malarone ( potential GI upset, and photosensitivity), the need to continue for 4 weeks after leaving a malaria zone (compared to only 1 week for Malarone), and for completeness, in women a theoretical issue on lowering birth control pill effectiveness (although this is actually a bit controversial).
The upside is certainly the cost.

I personally went on a 3 month trip to SE Asia a few years back and took doxy for a prolonged time- I didn't have any problems....

Good luck

You got it.
Have a great trip.

I would recommend getting all your pills before you leave, as there have certainly been reports of "counterfeit" pills in Asia- mostly originating from China, but all over Asia- pills with lower potency of the medication and less than you are supposed to be taking.
